What happens if I die?

If you die before you start taking your pension, a lump sum death benefit may be payable depending on your circumstances. A pension is also payable to your spouse or civil partner. We can consider a pension for someone else who is financially dependent on you if you complete a Dependant’s pension nomination form. Children’s pensions are payable to children who are:

  • under age 18
  • under age 23 and in full-time education or training
  • any age and incapable of self-support due to mental or physical incapacity, and were financially dependent on you

Please read RMSPS benefits payable when you die to find out exactly what benefits may be payable to your dependants when you die.

You can nominate one or more people to receive the lump sum death benefit, so make sure that you have submitted a complete and up-to-date Direction of lump sum death benefit form. More details can be found in the booklet here.
